"curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

i. Right, so, I am leaving for Connecticut tomorrow; and yes, it's only a little less sudden to me than it is to you lot. Dad desperately needs a holiday and has managed to get time off of all of his jobs for this weekend, so we are running off to the Strawberry Park Folk Festival tomorrow and shall be back on Monday. I am rather excited at the prospect, abrupt as it is, because Richard Shindell will be there. (Also Lucy Kaplansky and Dave Mallet and...some other people.) And the weather will be chilly and a bit drizzly and the main stage is surrounded by trees and I could not ask for a better atmosphere. (See, the thing about music festivals is that they are usually terribly hot, and I am not fond of that sort of weather, nor tans, neither. Hot and shadeless, hark you. So this, really, is completely marvellous.) There will be internet access, but I doubt I'll be able to post. And oh, scarves and jumpers and cape, how I've missed you!

ii. In fact, it is beautifully autumnal today -- I am wearing my favourite orange jumper and a cranberry-coloured vest, and the wind is sharp and biting and crisp and evenings are beginning to be a bit witchy, with the wind whistling through the cracks in the windows and leaves fluttering hither and thither. The trees are still mostly green, but I can sense it -- any day now we shall wake up and find that the tree in front of my window has gone gold.

iii. Thanks to the machinations of the thoroughly magnificent [profile] lady_moriel , I have just seen my first episode of Firefly. This sounds horribly stoic and businesslike, so picture, if you will, me jumping over piles of clothing and papers and musical instruments in my bedroom, waving my arms like a crazed propeller. Because VERILY IT IS MADE OF AWESOME ADSKLHGLKHG *flail*. The characters! The music! The production values! The plot! The scifi-western-Chinese aesthetic! (Which is so perfectly right that it deserves a meta-y post of its own eventually.) The costumes! The witty repartee dialogue! The awesome! Have I mentioned the characters? Only I think I am madly in love with each and every one already.

And of course I would begin watching this right before I go off on holiday and can't see another episode for five days.

Which I ought to be preparing for straightaway. Oh, and still no word on Oliver!. Good grief, it's been a week. And, er, I am wretchedly behind on the f-list and on emails, so -- really, I'm sorry. I'm a bit harried at the moment, and I am trying to get to you all as best I can. ♥

Oh, have a marvellous time, darling! -waves- Now I've got to run off and listen to the one Richard Shindell song I have in honour of this, and also in honour of your lovely day (we haven't had any really autumnal days yet, although I hear they arrive in October, and the prospect is thrilling... a pox upon SoCal's seasonlessness!).

OH FIREFLY. -envies- I have been wanting to watch that for a very long time. Perhaps that's what I shall attempt after I finish the final two eps of Torchwood, since Life on Mars decided to hate me, or something. But yes. I've been watching Torchwood with Noelle over g-talk and half of what I say is keyboard smashing because LO: IT IS MADE OF WIN (although I am not entirely sure how you would feel about it).

Anyway. I will be sending threatening vibes in the general direction of the Oliver! directors. (But not too threatening; I wouldn't want them to think ill of you.)

ALLIE IF I HAD SEEN IT WOULD MY LJ NOT BE FULL TO BURSTING WITH IT?? ;D I have been trying to see it for some time now, since THE ENTIRE INTERNET is buzzing and everything I've read just sounds niftier and niftier, and lo! [livejournal.com profile] lady_moriel stepped in! Also, continuing my tradition of not joining a fandom until I know an obscene amount about it already and even laugh at some of the inside jokes. This is a very strange pattern...

CURSE MY OWN LACK OF OBSERVATION CURSE IT I SAY.

Don't watch the movie before you finish the series. Oh, and watch this (http://www.session416.com/): it's a really cool viral promo that Joss put out to promote the movie. No movie spoilers, though! But wait until you've finished the series before watching it.

[identity profile] last-archangel.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh love, you can see the show. Go to tv-links.co.uk, and there are usually live links to watching full episodes and such.

A word of advice: don't watch Serenity before you have seen all the episodes. I saw the film first, and although I love the show, it was a little sad from the beginning, knowing that I knew how it ended.

Welcome to the Browncoat ranks, Ensign Banui!

[identity profile] travellers-home.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
A warning: if you love Firefly, beware the movie they made afterward, Serenity. I do not like it. Especially the end... I could kill whoever thought killing people off was a good way to end it. I won't give any specific spoilers, because that would be nasty; and I won't tell you not to watch it, because that's your decision to make; but I refuse to recommend it.

But Firefly, yes. It is Made Of Awesome. :D

Enjoy the music festival... I really must get to one someday, only I think we haven't any at all within a reasonable driving distance. Pooey.

[identity profile] wanderlight.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
FIREFLY FIREFLY FIREFLY. I expect to be kept updated on it. Obviously you see the MADE OF WIN AND AWESOME, and then some, and ... yes. It is very hard for me to be coherent about this series, but anyway. Yes.

April is the cruellest month; autumn is the most beautiful season. April has nothing to do with anything, no, but I wanted to quote Eliot, so shush.

Enjoy Richard Shindell! :)

[identity profile] builtofsorrow.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
There is only one thing in the world worse than gratuitously quoting Eliot, and that is not quoting Eliot.

I FORGOT TO MENTION WE ARE BRIEFLY STUDYING PRUFROCK IN ENGLISH CLASS. I NEARLY HAD A SEIZURE OF HAPPINESS AND DIED WHEN I FOUND OUT. !!!

[identity profile] builtofsorrow.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT. WHATWHAT. WHY DOES EVERYONE GET TO STUDY PRUFROCK BUT ME. -envies-

FIREFLY!!! As a new convert myself, I am very full of squee. Kaylee - most adorable thing ever, y/y? :D

[identity profile] faeriemaiden.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
YES. Gorblimey, I just want to squish her; she's brilliant.

[identity profile] bonny-kathryn.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Firefly is the best. show. ever. (Well, as long as we also mention the awesomeness that is Buffy. Because Buffy has the best Joss Whedon episodes. But, Firefly is the best all round *show*). Firefly is shiny, and wonderful, and Serenity is one of the great sci-fi movies of all time. Mmmm. Yes.

[identity profile] un-titled-love.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Have a fabulous time, dear! I'm incredibly excited for you and desperately envious of your weather. Firefly is high on my list of Things That I Need To Watch - Nelle said she'd wait and watch it with me once I'm done with DW and Torchwood. Yay!

Still sending good thoughts and wishes your way for Oliver. ♥

[identity profile] greyeyedpixie.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like you're enjoying some wonderful weather. I love Autumn~

Have a great time at the Festival!

Drat it all, I am now the LAST person who has not seen Firefly. UTTERLY THE LAST. ARSE.

Also am most disappointed that you are Off, because on Monday I will be moving into college and then giving my computer to Repair Blokes and so probably really absent, woe & despair. :( I miss having 876-line conversations! actually we have had ones longer than that.

[identity profile] builtofsorrow.livejournal.com 2007-09-14 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I HAVE NOT SEEN IT EITHER; TAKE COMFORT.

(I have no idea why I felt the need to type that in all caps, but I also have no idea why I felt the need to ingest large amounts of sugar when I was already giddy over a wonderful first day at work, and now I am doing utterly silly things like skipping & dancing about & flailing over stuff & coming up with a list of Proofs Oscar Wilde & I Are Soulmates & leaving ridiculously long, nonsensical comments in other people's LJs.)

[identity profile] lady-moriel.livejournal.com 2007-09-14 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I could just possibly send the links to you too. You know, if you groveled enough and that. ;p Or if you commented on my [livejournal.com profile] dw_cross fic?

[identity profile] faeriemaiden.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
'S okay; it means I'm not the last person to see something, for once. (Also, pretty much my entire f-list has been indoctrinated into the Cult of Who by now. YOU STARTED THIS. YOU DID. )

♥!! And of course you are Off already and not reading this comment, but alas! Come back to me! And the longest conversation on the first page of my chat archive is 1012 lines, and -- oh dear, it's that one. *chortle*

me: "YOU DESERVE IT. MUCKING AROUND IN T. S. ELIOT'S LARDER, FOR GOD'S SAKE."
"HAVE YOU NO SENSE OF DECENCY?"
Noldo: "OF COURSE I DO."
03:36 "I WASN'T MUCKING ABOUT IN HIS LARDER STARKERS."

:p

[identity profile] ressie-noldo.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I am usually the last person to read something, and now I'm the last person to watch stuff as well. Hmph. I shall have to create a fandom for The Book of Lost Things or something. (I bought it at a bookshop in England that was on clearance and nobody has read it and it is magnificent.)

♥ ♥! I am Off indeed, but college wireless is not bad so I have the time to talk (GET ON GTALK!). & oh dear, that one. Not that I have it saved on Word at all, no.

[identity profile] midenianscholar.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
THE DOCTOR IS ON SCI FY CHANNEL!

My life is complete.

I just saw a BRAND NEW episode.

Every Friday night!

*waves it over you and taunts*

[identity profile] lady-moriel.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, d'you mean "Blink"? Isn't it completely awesome?

[identity profile] midenianscholar.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Even though I had no idea where it was, since we haven't watched any of the third season, it was awesome! :D

[identity profile] lady-moriel.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, "Blink" is a really good one to jump in on, because it basically has nothing to do with the rest of season 3. Seasons 2 and 3 have both had a "Doctor-lite" episode because shooting schedules meant the Doctor and his companion couldn't be around for most of one episode, and "Blink" was S3's "Doctor-lite" ep. Which means it's not part of any story arc at all, plus it focuses on different one-shot characters...and unlike "Love & Monsters," S2's Doctor-lite ep, "Blink" is actually really fantastic on its own merits. Also scary, because I have never looked at a statue the same way again since watching it.

[identity profile] midenianscholar.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. Ever since, Laura likes to go, "Oooh! Don't blink!" There were two angels (they looked like they were weeping but their faces weren't covered) in the movie we watched last night--Oliver!, actually. We about died laughing.

[identity profile] faeriemaiden.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
DRAT YOU. *scowly face*

But, OMG. "Blink" is pretty much my favourite episode of television ever. It's so pretty, and Sally is amazing, and it totally stands on its own as...a really, really short film, or something. Also, it contains the line, "This is my timey-wimey detector. It goes ding when there's stuff." :D

Still. Why can't we have BBC America on our cable plan instead of Style, or Hallmark, or the hunting channel? D:

[identity profile] midenianscholar.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I made "Blink" icons. *nods*
