I'm not sure where the phrase comes from - my grandmother, who's from not-so-darkest Yorkshire (i.e. Castleford), occasionally uses the phrase 'black dog on your shoulder' to mean having a bad day. Perhaps it stems from something along those lines...Use at will, say I!
