On Friday I got my hair lopped off.

I wanted something a bit vintage and a bit modern; something that would suit fairly well all of the ridiculous styles I tend to flitter between (lately the sorts of things I've been donning fall under a category that might be termed Victorian Punk Gypsy); something which would, when complete, look completely marvellous. Which I think it does, and I am delighted, although my long-haired self of two or three years ago would likely be shocked and horrified. I've never had it quite this short before. (It's excellent for hat-wearing! I look so much better in my hats than I did before.)

Some other angles:

(honestly the purpose of the above very MySpace-y photograph is more to show off my splendid fingerless gloves than anything else, but look at all of the wonderful layering the hairdresser did on the left side! and, by the way, my tripod has fallen to pieces and I can't afford a new one, hence the hand-held self-portraits.)

So, Friday was a really spectacularly lovely day, even though I was Out for most of the daylight hours. Mum (and Leandra) and I left the house for our hair appointment and various errands around eleven thirty and arrived home around six thirty. We stopped at the Goodwill first, where I found blue and orange plaid pumps (ridiculously tall, for pumps, but so absurd -- and plaid! -- that I couldn't resist them), burgundy knee socks, and a vintagey patterned long-sleeved tee and a rather ugly fishnet running shirt off of which I plan to cut the sleeves to wear with t-shirts. And! Master & Commander for five dollars! Completely un-scratched! This is particularly fantastic because our Goodwills have almost never got DVDs, much less ones anyone would want to do anything besides get rid of. Then we went to get our hair cut, stopping for lunch along the way. (McDonald's, I'm afraid, as it is cheap and quick. Fried chicken sandwiches are a great improvement on hamburgers, however, and a milkshake is always good company.) And -- can I say without being terribly vain? -- I felt rather fabulous. I had on my off-white gown that I wore on Christmas, with brown stockings and brown shoes and a bit of lace tied round my neck and pearls and a narrow brown-and-yellow-and-orange-and-white knit scarf, and for once my skin had cleared up reasonably well, and I'd put on liquid foundation rather than powder, which made my skin look considerably less a) blotchy and c) scaly dry. I am rarely very comfortable with my physical appearance, so to feel lovely for once is rather liberating.

The salon was a little one, squeezed into a jumble of shops. Inside there were mirrors and a great floral sofa and stalls for the hair-cutting all painted a warm shade of orange. We know the lady who does the cutting, so we chatted while she finished up with her first client and then went on to Mum, while I paged (somewhat frantically) through hairstyle catalogues, as I still hadn't much idea what I wanted, other than an immensely fabulous bob.

One of the nicest things about getting one's hair cut is having one's hair washed beforehand. It's so wonderful to have someone massage your scalp (especially if you are me and your scalp is perpetually itchy no matter how clean it is). And then she led me to the chair and began chopping. She kept exclaiming about how much hair I had -- it was only to my shoulders, but my hair is monstrous thick. It took her over an hour to cut it, what with all of the carving and layering she did. And then! Well, I was pleasantly shocked. I'd no idea my hair could look so nice. And it started to curl up wispily at the ends as it dried! I kept peeking into the mirror excitedly.

We went to the mall afterwards, where I felt marvellous and tried not to flaunt my hair very much. (At the fabric store I found silver buttons with a fleur de lis design on to sew onto my vest with all of the missing buttons.) At Claire's I spent my gift card on dangly feather-ended 1920s cabaret singer earrings and the choker in the photographs (which is of the sort I think of as "vampire necklaces" -- hark you, just look at stills from films that've got vampires in sometime) and fingerless gloves for Heidi, who had a share in the card, and I helped Mum choose a lot of necklaces, at least one of which I may have to borrow. Frequently. And Rue 21, which has the splendidest sales, yielded the blue and white babydoll blouse in the photographs, which is very long and flairs out and has got pockets (exactly iPod sized!) and was only a few dollars. (I also bought a used copy of The Illusionist at FYE, because I couldn't help myself. If you were to examine my -- shamefully small, for someone who wants to be a filmmaker, but I've only recently begun buying movies as it is very hard to watch them in a house with three younger siblings! -- DVD collection, you might draw the conclusion that I fancy period dramas with noteworthy cinematography. And you would be quite right, too.)

Saturday was feeling a bit rubbish, but I bicycled to the library and got my last book in and gave the librarians Christmas cookies, and they were so thrilled that it made my day. My advice to you is: please appreciate your librarians and give them cookies. Nobody ever gives librarians cookies and that is a shame.

I also spent much of the evening listening to Loreena McKennitt's An Ancient Muse, which is gorgeous and rather more Eastern than her previous efforts.

Today lots of people exclaimed over my hair, and I was very tired in church because Moony, the scoundrel, seduced me into watching two episodes of Firefly entirely too late at night. So I retaliated by watching a lot of Doctor Who in broad daylight. Not sure how well that's working...

You look lovely, Banui!

It's F. Scott Fitzgerald, Rita! Must I be forced to revoke your geek licence? (Though I haven't actually read Bernice Bobs Her Hair, or much Fitzgerald at all, for that matter. :p)

*clings to license* :p

(I suspect that The Divine Comedy stole their song title from Fitzgerald, then. All the best things are stolen from Fitzgerald. Or Eliot. *nods* Which Fitzgerald stories have you read? I finished The Last Tycoon recently, which was v. v. interesting on account of being unfinished. (Fitzgerald had a heart attack and DIED while writing it.))

♥!

The new hairstyle suits you so well!

Firefly and Doctor Who ftw, as well... I recently discovered that one of the libraries in town finally got some of the season 1 and 2 discs of the good Doctor, so I've been obsessing over them a bit. I wish they had got Firefly as well, but so far I haven't seen them anywhere.

I am still not used to your haircut. I've been looking at it for a while, too. I intend to cut off all mine when it's about a foot longer than it is now.

Your new haircut is lovely (immensely fabulous, in fact), and suits you really well!

Oooh, period dramas with noteworthy cinematography - an excellent choice. Have you seen Gosford Park? The cinematography is perhaps subtle rather than noteworthy per se, but I've now seen it five or six times, and each viewing brings up new and interesting details. Plus, it's pretty much a Who's Who of great British actors, and all the performances are spot-on.

And Master and Commander! Much squee! I recently acquired the double disc version, and the making-of type extras are fascinating.
