music requests = awkward

As of, um, just now, I have 1000 songs on iTunes. [insert shock here] Goodness, I didn't realise that my music collection plus a goodly amount of my dad's music collection was that large. (Now d'you see why I must have the 7,500-song video iPod? ...Which we can't afford and I can't even hope to save up for anytime in the near future?)
Which...yeah, speaking of music, could I persuade someone upload Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound album for me? I own it, but, like many people, I've got the copy that is incompatable with iTunes, which means that I rarely listen to it, because my discman is dead and my stereo is a hazard to CDs. It happens to be one of my favourites. ('The Blues', anyone? 'The Fatal Wound'? 'Daisy'? Blimey! Also, I realised while listening to it on my stereo--which, as usual, made a generally benign album skip like mad--that it reminds me a very great deal of
tuesday_skyline.
midenianscholar was kind enough to burn me a copy, but it appears to be one she bought off of iTunes, which means it refuses to work on my computer.
Also, three tracks on my Coldplay X&Y album skip tremendously (it used to be four, but I found a download of 'Till Kingdom Come'), which I know is the fault of my bloody rotten stereo, so, if anyone's feeling charitable, could you also send me 'The Hardest Part' (one of my favourite songs, and it's almost entirely obliterated!), 'Swallowed in the Sea', and 'Twisted Logic'?
...Argh. I feel like an absolute heel for begging. Um. Maybe I could offer a song or two in return? (I can't offer entire albums, as a) my computer would likely explode from the effort, and mostly b) I don't feel comfortable with that and would prefer you go out and buy them unless they are out of print, especially if they're an obscureish indie artist. Yes, I do have several burned albums which wonderful people gave me, but, you know, I don't encourage it, and most of them were decently popular stuff, too, so I wasn't over-worried about some starving artist not getting a sale out of it.)

Date: 2006-11-30 02:07 am (UTC)As for the music requests: 'tis no trouble at all, as long as you don't mind waiting a couple days. As with everything else, those songs are living on my work computer (which I won't be seeing all Christmas break! WOE), so I'll probably get to that...uh...tomorrow, maybe. Or Friday, for sure, if not tomorrow. But yes, I wouldn't do this for just anyone, but since I know you own the CDs already, that's not a problem. (That's odd that

Piffle. My iPod currently holds 1490 songs. What do you mean, that doesn't count since I have't listened to probably half of them? :p
GOSH. What did you do? :D
I have a decent amount of songs that I don't listen to and some which I don't even like all that much, which I uploaded out of guilt in the hopes that I would, eventually, get around to loving them, and so far have not (I feel like a horrible person if I leave a song or two out of an album, but then, isn't that what mp3s are for--the freedom to play what you want and leave out the rest?). I need to delete most of them, because my hard-drive is clogged enough as it is, poor thing.
That's odd that midenianscholar's CD didn't work, though--the one sure and easy way I've heard of unprotecting .mp4 files is to burn them to a CD and then rip them into iTunes as mp3s. But who knows.
Really? I don't know how that works, because the whole point is supposed to be that if it's not the account that purchased the songs, then you are probably uploading them Illegally and Woe Betide You, and iTunes will Kill You With Fire? :p Maybe this only works with one's own purchased music, in which case I ought to try it with my KT Tunstall album which I bought with the iTunes gift card that Alyssa gave me six months ago. It refused to work in the car (and the car played my dad's burned mp3s all the time), which I suppose is no longer an issue as the van has only got a tape player and Mum's car has only got a radio, but...yeah.
Except The Like. :p (By the way, I've recently fallen in love with "June Gloom." In case you were wondering. Also, I've been obssessively playing that Deb Talan song that avonleigh put in her RT fanmix because I've fallen in love with Deb Talan too, apparently. Also, it took me forever--i.e., I noticed the musical similarities several times and finally looked it up--to realize that Deb Talan is in The Weepies, which could possibly be why they sound so alike. >_< Vampire = dork.)
Well, yes. And once I'm actually earning money, I'd like to buy the album, in order to support the artists and have something to show off. Annoyingly, most of my really interesting music is either something I have three to eight songs of on iTunes, or was burned for me, usually by my guitar teacher, so my little shelf of CDs looks...sadly conventional. (Okay, it's got a whole load of Solas. It's just that I've been listening to Solas for five years, and I tend to forget that not everyone's heard of them. And Sixpence isn't exactly wildly popular anymore.) I do have Eisley and Sleeping At Last, though, and OMG SLEEPING AT LAST HAS THE BEST ALBUM ART EVAR. [/lack of intelligence]
Deb Talan, yay!! *is obsessed* I could probably be persuaded to send you another song or two, in the hopes that you will buy the album and make up for me having it given to me. Also, a Like song is going in the next Tuesday Skyline mix, which is...starting to collect a lot of songs, actually. o.O
P.S.: if you actually listen to music on your computer at work, you should get last.fm (last.fm). Because it's fun. And I could randomly bother you. And the little plugin thing, if you have it up, tells you what you are listening to and gives a brief artist bio, which is extraordinarily helpful.

Date: 2006-11-30 06:06 am (UTC)Uploaded almost my entire music collection, plus a lot of my dad's/the family's music, plus all the random single tracks people have sent to me or I've downloaded elsewhere (which reminds me, I got a bunch of random tracks from fanmixes recently, which haven't even made it to the work Mac yet). But...I still haven't listened to a lot of my older stuff that's on there.
I think...you have to burn them a specific way for it to work...I haven't tried it, but here's a link (http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-Purchased-iTunes-Music-into-Unprotected-Mp3s).
I could probably be persuaded to send you another song or two, in the hopes that you will buy the album and make up for me having it given to me.
Yus. That would be marvelous.
And...I actually did get last.fm, on my work computer, but...I have no idea how to use it. Which means, yeah, I should really learn, maybe? But when I'm at work I don't have that much time for extended goofing off, and I can't do anything with it at home. Mostly I was thinking it would just work with iTunes to show what I've been listening to on my iPod recently, but I actually have no idea if it does that or not.

Date: 2006-11-30 02:37 am (UTC)Ack, I just figured out the really, really weak part of my reasoning: there's a ninety-percent chance that I wouldn't even buy it from the artists anyway, because I can't afford new albums, generally, so I buy them from Amazon Marketplace. Which means that the artists get absolutely no money out of the transaction.*headdesk*

Date: 2006-11-30 03:39 am (UTC)You are worried about music piracy too? ♥ Or not worried, but rather, have a conscience? I am so glad to find a kindred spirit. :)
See, I have no problem with downloading, but only for sampling. Ie., downloading to sample is fine, it's being a consciencious shopper, but it needs to be deleted eventually and I'm the only person on the planet who does that. Er. Anyhow. I am glad that you support the music industry, most especially obscure indie artists.
If you still don't have the Coldplay songs by the weekend, email me? I can poke around on Limewire and get them for you (since I don't actually own any Coldplay), it won't be a problem.
I know what you mean about the iPod. I have a Nano, which is a nice size, and I thought that'd definitely be enough space, but I haven't even got half of my music on there now. :/

I don't necessarily delete things later, because I fully intend to buy the albums as soon as I've got the money (and I'm obsessively anal about my playcounts on iTunes, which is...kind of approaching scary, actually), and then there's the odd song here and there which is the only one from an artist which I care to own, but yes--I refuse to download an entire album (except for the one time someone...sort of uploaded one for me without me asking for it at all, but I really, really want to buy it, eventually, when I've got money), and if I feel I'm getting too much of a particular artist without having bought anything by them, I stop downloading unless a rare track shows up or something, which so far has not happened. One thing that, quite fortunately, staves temptation, is my utter adoration for album art and liners, and how much I like to see that row of CDs on my desk.
I wish so many artist would quit fussing about music downloading and take advantage of it, because, honestly, it helps them more than it hurts them, in the long run, for the most part. I have bought several things which I never would have if I hadn't been sent or downloaded an mp3 (I don't listen to the radio much; all of our stations here except for NPR are absolute rot). I'm encouraged by the occasional indie artist, who is probably not going to get much of any radioplay anywhere, offering up a few tracks on their website for sampling, but I suppose I'm also discouraged by the general treatment of 'fans' towards these favourite artists of theirs. If you appreciate them that much, buy their music, for goodness' sake. No wonder so many artists tend to stay as far away as they can from free downloads.
Augh, I don't even know what I'm saying just now.

*laughs* Yeah, and it doesn't help that my dad, for the most part, has got excellent taste and considerably more money than me, I just uploaded most of one of his newer albums this afternoon, and there are still loads of old ones which I haven't got around to looking through yet. :D

Date: 2006-12-03 07:37 am (UTC)One thing I mourn is the death of the album. I love the cohesiveness of a good album -- and I think that what with all of the downloading snippets of things, no one appreciates them these days. It's all hit singles and suchlike.
Yeah, I buy as much as I can too. Limited by money, of course, and since I'm an unemployed student that's quite a limit. I don't mind downloading the occasional song, either -- it twinges at my conscience a little, but sometimes I just love the song so. Much.

This is true! There was once a point where I was 100% against downloading and would try to shoot anyone who did, and I never believed that argument. But now that I've started downloading occasionally, it really is true; downloading is the only way I can find decent music. And yeah. You're making sense -- to me at least! ^^

Date: 2006-11-30 04:04 am (UTC)Sadly, I can't offer you any of that music, because I have never actually heard any Switchfoot, and although I do own X&Y it is copy-protected. *fume* (Er, you probably didn't hear about all the drama -- the version of X&Y sold in the Indian region was only playable on a regular stereo, and completely piracy-proof (at least for duffers like me -- someone smarter than I might be able to crack it). This makes me sad.)
I'm afraid that I have far fewer scruples than you do about music piracy -- this is more due to necessity than due to any particular lack of morals, as it's nearly impossible to buy obscureish indie music here, and downloading is therefore the only way I can get hold of music. I fully intend to buy a lot of the stuff I enjoy if/when I make it to the US, though.

Date: 2006-12-01 05:52 am (UTC)Drat you! My mum's brother isn't nearly that awesome! I'm afraid I shall have to beg, borrow, or steal mine. Or bribe. If I still lived in the city, I could go about with a great luscious platter of chocolate mint brownies and stop hungry-looking iPod users on the subway and try to persuade them to exchange their soulless bit of machinery for--look, they're hot and melty, see? :p

I officially loathe copy-protection just now. This is why I have barely listened to Nothing Is Sound in the year that I have owned it. Gosh. And now I am pretty much considering managing to buy Imogen Heap's most recent album off of iTunes for once because people on Amazon keep warning of its copy protection. (Except I want the CD case, drat it!) *pats*

Er, yes, I completely understand. (Gee, I feel impaired here because we haven't any decent music stores except for FYE, where everything costs eighteen dollars or more. :p) I would probably find myself in a similar situation if I ended up moving with my parents to wherever-in-the-Indian-subcontinent-they-will-probably-move-to-in-three-or-four-years, except I will be in college by then, so...I won't be. If that sentence was even readable. Guess what time it is. ...Never mind. Don't. ;)
